Nikki Caro

Pei (played by Keisha Castle-Hughes) is the granddaughter of the chief of an ancient tribe on the coast of New Zealand. Mother once gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, but unfortunately, both she and the baby boy died. Disheartened, father left for another place, leaving the orphan girl Pei to be raised by her grandparents.

McFarlane is based on a true story from 1987. Costner plays a coach who comes to a poor, dusty agricultural town where most of the residents are Latinos. He turns the high school students there into cross-country runners, bringing hope to himself and the town.
