The story takes place during World War II. British soldier Eric (played by Colin Firth) was captured by the Japanese army and sent to work as a laborer on the Thailand-Myanmar Railway. Eric secretly hid a radio. By listening to the radio, he learned that Japan was already at the end of its strength in the war.
