The protagonist, Ma De, is a British fairy tale writer who is at a low point in his life. Encouraged by Lucky, he comes alone to a mountain village in Yunnan to teach. There, he meets a rigid village head, a strict female volunteer teacher and a group of innocent children. Troubles and good fortune follow one after another.
