On the evening of January 29, 1990, shortly before the start of Chile's democratic transition period, dozens of political prisoners escaped from prisons in Santiago. 24 radicals spent 18 months digging a tunnel when passing by Manuel Rodriguez's Patriotic Front. They used spoons, forks and a screwdriver to dig over 80 meters long and hid 55 tons of mud and dirt in the prison.
