The annual Lunar New Year is approaching. The elderly couple of the Cheng family (played by Li Baotian and Zhao Lirong) living in a rural area of Northeast China are happily waiting for their children to come home for the New Year. Last year's reunion dinner ended in a bad mood, so my mother is even more looking forward to having a pleasant reunion this time. Before long, the children returned one after another: the eldest son (played by Liu Xiaolingtong) was taciturn and honest, while the eldest wife (played by Ding Jiali) was sharp-tongued and spoiled. The brother-in-law of the official (played by Ge You) doesn't follow the right path. He has an affair outside and even forces his wife to have an abortion. The youngest son (played by Liang Tian) is idle and indulged in pleasure, only knowing how to ask for money. The father's most beloved second daughter, who once disobeyed his father's order and married a scaffolder (played by Shen Junyi), has now returned as a young couple who have achieved success through their own efforts. The seemingly joyous and harmonious brothers and sisters-in-law each have their own little Jiujiu. I wonder how this year's New Year's Eve dinner will end... Zhao Lirong won the Best Actress Award at the 4th Tokyo International Film Festival in 1990 for this film.[Collapse]
