Twelve-year-old Darva was strictly controlled and shaped into a Barbie doll by her pedophile father from a young age. She also believed that she was a woman and there was nothing wrong with falling in love with her father until her father was arrested. This film is the feature-length debut of French director Emmanuel Nicole. She challenges an extremely difficult moral theme and uses restrained and clear visual language to directly address serious and sharp social issues. The camera closely follows the protagonist, Darva, documenting her arduous journey from being portrayed as a mature woman, through self-awakening, to gradually learning to become a young girl. The newcomer actress Zelda Samson, who played Darva, won the New Star Award in the Critics' Week section of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival with her powerful performance. The film also won the Fipresci Critics' Award in the parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival.[Collapse]
