Zhao Po, a sophomore in the History department (Guo Xiaoran?) Zhao Po is a boy from a poor background. He is honest, kind, introverted and shy. His classmates are either children of high-ranking officials and soldiers or come from families of wealthy merchants who have returned from overseas. Compared with them, Zhao Po is like a pitiful and shabby ugly duckling. By chance, he met Gan Xiu (played by Huo Siyan), a hair-washing girl at a hair salon. She was a pure and innocent girl who remained untainted by the mire and worked hard to earn money to support her mentally challenged younger brother. One day, Zhao Po took Gan Xiu and his fellow villagers He Changxing (played by Zhao Zhigang) and Du Yongqing (played by Tang Yino) out for a trip. But he witnessed two fellow townspeople's bestiality flaring up, which defiled Gan Xiu. After that, Gan Xiu completely vanished from Zhao Po's life. He searched everywhere and seemed to have entered a confusing world... This film won the Best Director Award and Best Newcomer Award at the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival Media Awards.[Collapse]
