One summer, 14-year-old Duncan (played by Liam James) went on vacation to Trent's cottage by the sea with his mother Pam, his mother's boyfriend Trent and Trent's daughter. Like most children from divorced families, Duncan doesn't like her mother's boyfriend. Duncan found himself out of place among Trent's friends, and the already taciturn man became even more depressed. It was not until he met Owen (played by Sam Rockwell) on a bicycle trip. Owen is a staff member of the local water park. Through Owen's introduction, Duncan became a part-time employee of the water park. There, he made new friends, spent happy times, and at the same time grew closer and closer to Susanna (played by Anna Sophia Robb), a girl from his neighbor who was also troubled by family problems.
