The story took place in a small northern city in China in 1997. Qiu Wu was sentenced to death in the first instance for stealing two cars. The presiding judge of this case, Judge Tian, had just lost his daughter in a car accident, and the vehicle involved in the accident was a stolen one. Qiu Wu attempted to gain a lenient sentence by donating one of his kidneys, and the terminal illness of the wealthy businessman, Mr. Li, would also be cured because of this kidney.
