Shimamura (played by Koji Kimura), an unemployed scholar who travels around relying on his family fortune, accidentally arrives at a place called Snow Country. At a local hot spring inn, he meets 19-year-old beautiful sake girl Komako (played by Shima Iwashita). Komako admires Shimamura's talent, but Shimamura is obsessed with pleasure. On the night they left the Snow country, the two people with such a huge disparity in status finally came together. Back in Tokyo, Shimamura couldn't forget Komako. The following year, he returned to the Snow Country again. By this time, Komako had become a geisha and was working hard to earn money to cure her fiance, Yukio's illness.
