Oliver (played by Mark Lester) is an orphan who grew up in the church since childhood. At the age of nine, Oliver was sent to work in a factory and later became an apprentice at a funeral home. Oliver's intelligence and quick-wittedness enabled him to quickly establish himself in the funeral home, but at the same time, he was envied by his companions, who deliberately provoked and enraged him. Eventually, Oliver left the funeral home. Homeless Oliver led a life of wandering around. After a long journey, he arrived in London. A pickpocket named Dodger (played by Jack Wild) brought Oliver to the bandit leader Fagin (played by Ron Moody), and thus Oliver became one of them. In an accident, Oliver was arrested by the police. But later, he was proved innocent. The person involved, Mr. Brownlow (played by Joseph O'Conor), felt extremely guilty towards Oliver and took him in.
