The story takes place right after the end of World War II. Carol (played by Eleanor Parker) and Paul (played by Jean-Pierre Aumont) 's extramarital affair was discovered by Carol's husband Walter (played by Bill Travers), who gave Carol two choices. Either go with him to a very remote village in China where cholera is rampant, or get divorced. In the end, Carol set off with Walter, having no choice. In China, Carol met the free-flowing Tim (played by George Sanders), and through him, she got a job in a monastery. The relationship between Carol and Walter gradually mended over time, and everything seemed to be developing in an orderly direction. However, at this critical juncture, Walter died of the plague. At the same time, Carol found out she was pregnant.[Collapse]
