Middle-aged woman Bessie (played by Diane Keaton) has spent most of her life taking care of two elderly relatives: her father Marvin, who has suffered a stroke, and her eccentric aunt Ruth. Now, Bessie herself has also contracted leukemia. Her only hope of survival is that someone among her close relatives provides bone marrow. Bessie, having no choice, has to get in touch with her sister Lee (played by Meryl Streep), whom she hasn't been in contact with for 20 years. Li is a single mother. She doesn't want to meet Bessie, but thinking that she can temporarily set aside the troubles caused by her son Hank's (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) arson at home, she still takes her son back to their hometown in Florida. When the sisters first met, they were in a good mood, but as time went by, all the past unpleasantness began to haunt them again.
