During World War II, in German-occupied Poland, plumber Podek (played by Robert Wieckiewicz) and his partner Zapek were also involved in the business of thieves. The intricate sewer system became their best hiding place and storage room. He did business with the besieged Jewish quarter in the city and was an old acquaintance of the Ukrainian officers in the German army. In the chaotic times, he enjoyed a bit of freedom in life. Not long after, the Germans began to massacre and hunt down Jews. Some Jews who did not want to be sent to concentration camps made a deal with Podek and got the chance to hide in the sewer by paying a price per person. The dark and stinking sewer became Podek's refuge for the Jews. Soon, all the Jews on the ground were captured.
