Basel (played by John Mills) is the newly appointed commander of the Mountain Infantry Regiment. This serious and conscientious man decides to rectify the lazy habits within the army as soon as he takes office. Before the arrival of Basel, the life of the infantry regiment was laid-back and pleasant. Major Clessien (played by Alec Guinness) had a comfortable life, but now it was different, which made Clessien very dissatisfied. Although on the surface, Clessien was in full agreement with all the decisions made by Basel, behind the scenes, he constantly incited his subordinates to complain and be dissatisfied with Basel. One day, Clessien discovered that his subordinate was actually seducing his daughter behind his back. Blinded by rage, Clessien gave this overbearing kid a good beating.[Collapse]
