Before liberation, in the old Beijing City, there was a stinking ditch called Longxu Ditch to the east of the Tianqiao Bridge. The poor working people at the bottom of the class settled down along both banks of the stinking ditch. This group of people, deprived of their dignity, struggled to survive under the pressure of persecution, humiliation, disease and death. The common people have no access to tap water and can only drink bitter water from Wells. They have to travel half a mile to go to the toilet. Every time the rainy season comes, the water in the stinking ditch surges and overflows, entering the homes of the poor, emitting a foul smell and causing them great distress. The veteran entertainer Cheng Baoqing (played by Yu Zizhi), who was called a "madman" by others, was down and out and indignant. He relied on his wife Cheng Niangzi (played by Yu LAN) to sell cigarettes to make a living, and his favorite was the smart and lovely girl from the Ding family, Xiaoniuzi. The old society that was not human made people see no hope for the future. In the blink of an eye, liberation arrived, and the people of Longxugou finally welcomed a new world where they could turn their lives around and become masters... This film is adapted from the play of the same name created by Lao She.[Collapse]
