Mechanic Frank (played by Jack Nicholson), penniless, was taken in by Nick, a Greek shopkeeper in a small town near Los Angeles. Nick's young wife Cora (played by Jessica Lange) aroused Frank's strong interest, and Cora also grew tired of the alcoholic Greeks. The two soon had sex when Nick was in town and decided to elope. However, Frank's gambling habit forced the plan to change. Cora originally intended to kill the drunk Nick but only seriously injured him.
