The story takes place in the perennial cold Rocky Mountains. Bessie (played by Diane Keaton) and her husband Joseph (played by Kevin Kline) can no longer remember how long they have been married, at least long enough that their children have formed their own families. Joseph has always been a self-centered man, lost in his own world every day, which makes Bessie feel extremely lonely. One day, Bessie unexpectedly found a stray dog. Kind-hearted Bessie took it in and named it "Freeway". The clingy little dog brought back the luster to Bessie's pale life, and a friendship developed between the man and the dog. Little did he know that in an accident, Joseph lost the puppy. He had never seen his wife so angry before. Bessie and her friends decided to organize a search and rescue team to look for the whereabouts of the puppy.[Collapse]
