The story takes place in a British school. Harris (played by Albert Finney), a classical literature teacher, is about to retire. Taploo (played by Ben Silverstone) is a student that Harris likes very much. However, Taploo tells Harris that he has decided to give up classical literature and switch to studying science. Later, the principal found Harris and told him a piece of bad news that the school was not going to pay him a pension. When Harris's wife Laura (played by Greta Scacchi) learned of this news, a fierce quarrel broke out between her and her husband. In fact, Laura had already betrayed Harris.
